Behaviour Support

A Compassionate, Person‑Centred Approach

What Is Behaviour Support?

At Chrome Health, behaviour support is about more than reducing behaviours of concern — it’s about connection, dignity, and building skills for a safer, more independent life. Our practitioners provide specialist behaviour support in schools, homes, SIL and community settings, with care that is inclusive, trauma-informed, and grounded in lived experience.

Core Principles of Behaviour Support

Understanding “Behaviours of Concern”

Behaviours of concern are often indicators of an unmet need, such as communication difficulties, sensory overwhelm, emotional distress, or environmental stressors. These behaviours are not intentional mischief; they’re meaningful attempts to communicate what’s happening for the individual. Acknowledging this is the first step toward meaningful support.

Functional Behaviour Assessments (FBA)

Our specialists conduct a detailed FBA to uncover why a behaviour arises. This involves examining when, where, and how often a behaviour occurs, and what might be triggering or reinforcing it.

Individual Behaviour Support Plans (BSP)

From the assessment, we co-create a Behaviour Support Plan tailored to each person’s unique strengths, needs, and goals. Plans may include:

  • Proactive strategies to reduce triggers and build supportive environments
  • Skill development to empower communication, emotional regulation, and greater independence
  • Clear guidance for families and support networks to ensure consistency and confidence

Environment & Skill-Focused Strategies

PBS (Positive Behaviour Support) emphasises creating safe, affirming spaces, like adjusting routines or reducing sensory overload and teaching functional alternatives to challenging behaviours, rather than relying on reactive or punitive measures.

Ongoing Monitoring & Review

Behaviour support isn’t static. Plans are regularly reviewed and adjusted in collaboration with you and your support team to ensure they remain relevant and effective.

Why Behaviour Support Matters

Improves Quality of Life

By addressing root causes and building meaningful skills, individuals experience more independence, confidence, and fulfilment.

Reduces Restrictive Practices

PBS emphasises safe, respectful alternatives wherever possible. When restrictive practices are unavoidable, the plan documents their use clearly and works toward reducing reliance over time.

Empowers Communities and Care Networks

Families, carers, and support workers gain clarity, tools, and confidence to consistently support the person, creating a safer and more empathetic environment.
